When I started kicking around the idea of The Sushi Collection, there was one particular menu item I knew had to be included: the salmon rose. My oldest friend Chelsea and I made a habit of ordering salmon roses at every all-you-can-eat sushi spot we stumbled into throughout our late teens and early twenties, and that was quite a number. It wasn’t just the flavour of salmon roses that had Chelsea and I going back for more, it was also the look of them. We found salmon roses to be adorable; darling coral-hued blooms dotted with salmon roe that glinted like a clutch of gems. Almost too pretty to eat… almost.
After reading my overly poetic (and obsessive) description of salmon roses, you can’t possible be surprised to see the design above. Salmon Rose is what I would call my most hypnotic and, um, loud piece to date. When I set out to pay homage to my sushi bar favourite, I did not intend for it to go in such a psychedelic direction – it just kinda happened. In fact, after finishing Salmon Rose I sent a screenshot to my boyfriend with the message “Is this really weird?”, to which he replied “Wierdly good!”, and that was good enough for me.
Now, I realize this is usually the point where I introduce some wacky animation that features the star of my latest design, but alas, I’m a little short on time these days. It’s a good thing – this crazy little blog is gaining momentum, which is completely and wonderfully surprising. I am also working on a new video series that is more educational than simply ridiculous. I don’t have a release date hammered out for these upcoming videos, but as soon as I know you’ll know too.
Anyway, if your feeling bold and cheeky enough to don or hang this print, you can head over to mySociety6 shop to find all the goodness above and more.
As always, thanks for the support, you wonderful readers!
